Characters in a Crime Media Product

First 5 Minutes of a Crime Film

The film that I chose to look at was The Italian Job 1969. I chose this film as it is a crime film and it is based on a heist planned by the main star Michael Caine. Within the first few minuets of the film we see the title opening sequence where a man is driving his Lamborghini through the Alps Italy. Also there is non-diagetc music playing within the scene with the song Days Like These sang by Matt Monro playing over the car. Normally you would think that the music is the dialect sound in the scene but in fact it is the sound of the car which is a Lamborghini Miura we are able to hear the cars engine and at one point the music stops when he enters the tunnel where we hear the diabetic sound of the car and then the explosion at the end. In ways this is similar to our film as it starts off calm with Jacob walking down the street and then it goes to the action if him trying to rob a shop. which does happen in the Italian job as it goes from the scene in the alps to a tunnel where the man driving the Ferrari crashes and dies and his remains are removed. So in a way the begging of our film is similar to that of the Italian Job.

Settings of Crime Films

Within many crime films and television shows, there are a variety of different settings present throughout the duration of the aforementioned media product, each of which have a specific purpose, in which they attempt to fulfil.
Typically crime films would tend to take place in metropolitan city or otherwise crowded or affluent areas, such as in London, Las Vegas, Chicago, etc., with the criminal 'underbelly' of these cities being uncovered and explored throughout the film's span, as the seedy, corrupt or otherwise lawless nature of the setting is exposed by the presence of drug dealers, dark nightclubs and neon signs reading 'Girls, Girls, Girls'. However, we deemed this setting too inappropriate for our target audience, as our genre was that of a crime-comedy, and thus we wished to maintain a light-hearted approach to the criminal world.
This light-hearted atmosphere was conveyed as we didn't shoot the film in a casino, bank or bookies, as it would be done in a major Hollywood blockbuster, as we didn't feel this truly replicated the nature of our film, and thus it was substituted for a corner shop in town. This setting, tranquil in comparison to that of Ocean's Eleven or The Untouchables, felt truer to the anglocentrism that we had hoped for pre-production.
Within our second scene, the heist room is shown to be basic, it's not extravagant because why would it be? Our story is that of 3 moderately successful criminals, they aren't poor, but are certainly not rich, this room conveys this. Louie, Mitchell and Jacob can afford a living but just not an amazingly aesthetic 'epicentre of crime'; just the basics.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

Once we had made our film our audience were attracted to our choice if genre that we went for which in the end was a crime comedy style of film. Which was easily identifiable to our audience which we were able to gather the information from our post-production questionnaire. Which shows us as to what type of genre that people thought our film was where 64% of the people we asked thought it was a crime comedy which is the genre of our film. This result of 64% showed us that we needed to make our genre more obvious which seems to have worked as when we did our post production questionnaire where 92% of the people we asked said it was a crime comedy. this shows how from the pre to post production questionnaire we have attracted our audience as they noticed the genre more which means that they would be able to understand what it was about and if they liked our film or not. We were able to see if we would have attracted our target audience as in the post-production questionnaire we were able to see that when we asked the question Would you watch our film? 96% said yes which shows that we are aiming our film at the right audience as they found it to be appealing and they would go to watch the full film.

However we did not just attract our audience through the genre it was the content that we had that also appealed to our audience. For example, our film is a crime comedy aimed at a target audience of 15-30 years of age. So as you would expect we have used some taboo lexis within the film as it appealed more to the members of our age group as it makes it more comedic when something goes wrong in the film. We can prove that content like this appealed to our audience as in the pre-production questionnaire we asked the question What is you opinion on our film idea? where 76% had a positive opinion towards the idea. This was able to show us that people liked our initial idea of our script and screen play but we did have some negative effects about the amount of taboo language that we used within our film which we can see as an improvement that we could need to make to our film to widen our audience but overall the feedback was positive about the content that we have included in our film.

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our intended target audience for our film is between the ages of 15-25 these could be people of both genders as we don't just want to aim it at a young male audience. However when we did our pre-production questionnaire one of the questions that we asked 'What is your gender?' and we found that it was nearly a 50-50 spilt with the women at 52% and the men 48% but out of the 25 people we questioned 2 people said they they would not watch our film and these we both of the female gender which may indicate to us that we should possibly aim our film just at a male audience. Also out of the 25 people that we surveyed we also found out the age of the people who took part in our survey and they we all between the ages of 16-18 which they all fit into our intended target audience and going along side the results of the question 'Would you watch our film?' with 92% saying yes shows that we are aiming it at the right target age group. We also asked 'What is your occupation' and 36% answered unemployed which shows that they type of people that may be interested in out film relate to the characters as they they too are unemployed and have to steal for a living.

Evaluation Question 3

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Gender Representation:
In our film we have mainly focused on young male characters however the title sequence you are able to hear the voice of a woman shop keeper off camera tell Jacob to 'fuck off' when he asks for the money. However though this small bit of dialogue we are able to hear that the shop keeper challenges her gender stereotype as normally in crime films women are usually portrayed as the ones who are in distress and cannot defend themselves. Whereas in our film the female shop keeper differs as she is shown to not be afraid of a man who has just walked into her shop and asked for all the money as she defends herself by telling him to 'fuck off' and well Jabco being as bad a criminal as he is he does in fact 'fuck off'.

The gender that we see on camera though is that of a group of male characters who were the main focus for our film. Within our film the male character are supposed to me seen as the dominant force hence why the main characters are all male this is the case for only two of the character though Louie and Mitchell who are shown to be the tough successful criminals as they have the most money which they have stolen by using force. Whereas Jacob diverges from his gender stereotype as he is shown to be a weak pushover as he is is too scared to rob the shop as he was told to fuck off by the shop keeper and unlike the other characters Jacob does not use force to take the money he simply leaves. This shows how he differs as the other 'manly' characters would have used violence to get what they want and this is shown though the scene where Mitchell pulls out a knife and says that he had to use it whereas Jacob left as he is portrayed as a weak character.

Age:
In our film we have used characters form the younger generation which are usually portrayed negatively. This is why this age group suits are type of film as our genre is a crime comedy and the younger generation stereotypically are seen as the age group that commit the most crime. This is because they are seen to be the most confident age group in society as they are willing to try out new things such as crime. This is shown through the non-diegetic music that we used in our title sequence which is upbeat and is supposed to resemble how confident that Jacob is about robbing the store. Also another reason why we used character's of a younger age is that they are seen to have more comedic but immature personality's like our intended audience. This is shown through the amount of taboo language that is used such as 'fuck off' and 'nuns quim' both of these taboo phrases are seen to be more likely used by a younger generation.

Region:
The social group of region is shown in our film through the accents that the characters have and the setting of our film. Our film is set in Barnsley South Yorkshire, unfortunately Barnsley has negative connotations but we used these to our advantage. For example, we used the stereotypical idea that everyone in Barnsley does not have a job because the pits closed down by showing that to get some money people like Jacob have to resort to crime to 'earn' a living. Which we were also able to add a comedic value to as again people from Barnsley are also seen to be uneducated and a bit thick which is shown through the character Jacob who can't hold up a store and he doesn't realise that there was a camera watching him which again we were able to make it comedic.
